What is marriage

The other day someone mentioned to me there were some people hanging out and had signs that either said honk if you for Gay marriage or the other way around, I don't remember.  But it did make me think about it a little bit.  My wife although not particularly anti gay is really opposed to it, she sees it in a very traditional way and of course states all the ways they have rights without calling it marriage.  She is right, there are legal ways to ensure that someone and  their significant other no matter if married or not and even for non gays can have medical and power of attorney and a whole host of other rights.  I find it particularly funny that most straight people don’t hurry into marriage and some never marry and live together for years and yet there are people working hard for the right.  Frankly I am more offended by dead beat dads than two consenting adults of the same sex living together as long as I don’t have to see what they do in their private moments.

Every year or two this issue comes up in Maine, the last time it was rejected by the people but now they are considering it in the State House.  So I wondered what is marriage exactly, or at least the accepted definition.  It seems to be the legal and religious contract between a man and a woman, however if you take the very liberal Wikipedia definition it does include same sex unions as marriage.  Hmmmm....   So I guess it is a matter of opinion.  Basically I think of it as a way of supporting with a Mother and Father the raising of children and we all know that a two parent house is much better.  Although that isn’t the standard of the day, many times today the father isn’t even known, we use to call those young ladys something other than mothers when we were younger, but today it seems to be socially acceptable.  This situation most of the time leads to a Welfare family being created and after that it is generational, the child's education is how to swipe the Food Stamp plastic.  That is the best case scenario the worst case is they become a menace to society and land up a ward of the state in some correctional institution.  I am not for schools showing gay marriage as a life style, but then again, if our schools stopped being indoctrination mills and taught logic, philosophy, math, science, real history and the big one ENGLISH, would I be so concerned about it, not really.  Nothing is going to make a 15 year old be what they are not, sure it may give some kids courage to come out if you will, but I doubt it will convert anyone.

My next thought is where do I stand on this as a political issue.  Pretty far down on my priority list and it may not even exist there.  If a candidate in all other ways is a great candidate but supports Gay Marriage, they will get my vote and support, it is such a minor issue, I wonder what the big deal is.  I am going to go one step further, if the candidate is gay and there are gay conservatives and in all other ways they meet my real priorities, fiscal responsibility, strong national defense and strong enforceable immigration laws to name a few, they get my vote.  Which leads to another point, we as conservatives need to look at our priorities and drop off the earth the ones that are meaningless to our lives.
